CBCT (Cone Beam Imaging) Lake in the Hills, IL

At Root Dental, Dr. Maggie Grothe blends holistic dentistry with cutting-edge technology to offer superior care for every patient. Among our state-of-the-art tools is the CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scanner.

CBCT images allow Dr. Grothe to perform more detailed diagnoses than traditional 2D x-rays. This proves especially valuable for patients with prior root canal treatments.

Understanding CBCT and Its Function

CBCT means “Cone Beam Computed Tomography,” also known as “Cone Beam Imaging.” It's a specialized x-ray that captures a full 3D view of your head.

The CBCT scanner rotates an x-ray arm around your head, capturing up to 600 cone-shaped images of your mouth, jaw, and face. A computer program then combines these into a single image.

This produces a 3D model of your teeth, jaw, and sinuses, enabling precise detection of dental infections, bone issues, and even sinus or carotid artery conditions.

What to Expect During a CBCT Scan

Though advanced, getting a CBCT scan at Root Dental is quick, easy, and completely non-invasive.

  • Positioning the machine – A team member will guide you to the CBCT scanner and adjust it for optimal positioning. You can sit or stand for comfort, and you'll bite on a small block to keep your head aligned during the scan.
  • Performing the CBCT scan – Once set up, the scan begins. You’ll hear the scanner rotating as it captures over 600 images of your mouth. Stay still; the process takes only 20–30 seconds.
  • Examining the results – After the scan, return to the treatment room while the software merges the images into a 3D model for review with Dr. Grothe.

Initial Patient Evaluation

We often recommend CBCT scans for patients with prior root canals or numerous restorations such as fillings, crowns, bridges, or implants. This imaging enables Dr. Grothe to evaluate problematic teeth more effectively than 2D images alone.

Complex Oral Health Challenges

Sometimes, standard X-rays fall short in detecting complex oral health problems, like impacted wisdom teeth or previously root canal-treated teeth... they enable Dr. Grothe to view the affected tooth from all angles. Unlike 2D images that show just one perspective and may overlook pathology or nerve structures.

Preparing for Your Procedure

CBCT proves invaluable for oral surgery preparation, like dental implants. It offers Dr. Grothe a 3D perspective of your jaw, teeth, and sometimes nerves or blood vessels. This precise planning ensures a seamless procedure.

Answering Common CBCT Questions

Is a CBCT scan safe?

Yes. CBCT scans deliver more radiation than standard 2D X-rays, yet they remain entirely safe. They're used far less frequently than routine digital X-rays. Dr. Grothe typically orders one only for specific oral health concerns, surgical planning, or every 5 years.

How do I prepare for my scan?

Remove all metal objects from your head and neck, including hairpins, glasses, earrings, necklaces, and hearing aids. No other preparation is required. Our team will guide you through every step!

When will I get my CBCT results?

Right away! Our digital system assembles the images in real time, so the scan finishes in minutes. Dr. Grothe reviews results with you immediately. For deeper analysis, she may forward it to a radiologist, with results in a few days to a week.
